Sustainable Building Trends

The Aussie homeowner’s dream was at one time simply to own your own patch of land, with 3 bedroom cottage and picket fence proudly perched on top. However, the culmination of a series of natural disasters in Australia and the COVID crisis has seen a new community-minded consumer emerge, eager to actively contribute to the health of the planet. In turn, there is a rise in interest in sustainable building practises for the aspiring home builder however knowing where to start can be quite daunting.

In our latest blog, New England Waste explores some of the latest trends in sustainable home building and ways you can incorporate these into you new build.

Energy Efficiency

According to the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy, one of the most cost-efficient domestic renewable energy sources is solar power. This not only reduces the cost burden for residents but also contributes to improving the planet. Choosing appliances and light bulbs that are energy efficient are just some of the ways new home owners can reduce their carbon footprint and save money on the quarterly energy bill.

Insulation Fascination

Whilst many new home owners are more concerned with deciding between subway or herringbone tiles than insulation, placing this unsung hero at the top of your priorities list will pay big dividends in the long run. Quality insulation provides a barrier between your home and insanely hot or cold temperatures, meaning less money spent on heating and cooling, a more environmentally friendly footprint and more comfortable lifestyle.

Are your building materials up to green-code?

Building Materials

Choosing the materials your home is built out of should be geographically-influenced.

Heavy concrete and brick will absorb and release heat slowly, diminishing the effect of rapid temperature changes. Lightweight construction methods, such as brick veneer and timber or fibre boards, work better in hot and humid conditions.

New England Waste Septic Pump Out

New England Waste Septic System Customer Guide

New England Waste have been providing septic pump outs for the areas of Armidale, Uralla, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Guyra and Inverell since 1979. In that time we have become the local experts in septic services and so we have created this info sheet to help our customers understand how the older style septic systems operate.

This information applies to older style septic systems running into effluent filtration trenches, not to newer Aerated Waste Water Treatment Systems.

Septic tanks work by allowing waste to separate into three layers: solids, effluent and scum (see illustration below). The solids settle to the bottom, where microorganisms decompose them. This is called the sludge layer. Lighter matter will float to the top, where it forms the scum layer, this layer helps prevent unpleasant smells escaping from the tank.

The middle layer of effluent exits the tank and travels through underground perforated pipes into the drainage field as more water is deposited into the tank from the house.

Generally the level in the tank will always look full, this makes it hard to determine if the system needs pumping. Main reasons your tank will require pumping will be for excess sludge, the sludge layer should not be more than 1/3 the depth of the tank, at this point pumping is recommended.

The scum layer can also cause problems, most commonly blocking the outlet, preventing effluent run off into the drainage pits or trenches.

It is important to remember, that after pumping your tank will not be completely empty, as pumping is done to remove most of the sludge and scum layer, removing the entire contents of the tank is not beneficial as the microorganisms that break down solids will not be present in sufficient numbers to start the process again.

Malcolm and Howard Lancaster from New England Waste with their fleet of waste removal vehicles

New England Waste at your disposal

Republished from Glen Innes Examiner

Malcolm Lancaster is making a clean sweep of his family business with a new name to reflect the change. New England Waste, formerly Glen Innes Waste, was founded by Howard Lancaster in 1979, providing waste management solutions to domestic and commercial clients in and around Glen Innes.

Howard’s youngest son Malcolm took over the business earlier this year and is expanding operations into the Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Inverell, Guyra, Uralla, Armidale, Warwick and Stanthorpe areas.

“We made the decision to rebrand the business as New England Waste because of the expansion into more areas of the New England area, Malcolm says.

New England Waste supplies skip bins, hook binscommercial waste management solutions for businesses, worksites and large events as well as septic services and portaloos.

“Dad is 79 and he’s got to the point where he likes to think he’s retired but also likes to keep his finger in the business,” Malcolm says. “Dad’s been heavily involved in the Glen Innes community, he’s always been active, and is now just winding down.”

New England Waste has five trucks in total, including a septic, front fork truck, two skip bins and a hook bin truck.
“We are also accredited to take asbestos, in fact we have done a lot of work with different constructions companies,” Malcolm says.

The company employs six full-time and casual staff. “If you are looking for an established waste company that can provide a range of waste management solutions including skip bins, hook binscommercial collection, septic services and portaloos in a high-quality
and affordable manner, then contact us now,” Malcolm says.

Skip bins are available in 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 cubic metre sizes.
Hook bins are available in 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 cubic metre sizes.
A tip for renovators is to start filling the skip with flat items and remember to fill up the corners. “We can accommodate small residential jobs through to large commercial and business waste management solutions,” Malcolm says.

“Long-term commercial waste solutions that are flexible and tailored to our
client’s needs are available to small, medium and large businesses.”

Commercial clients have come to rely on New England Waste for the supply of front lift bins, perfect for the removal of business waste such as stationary, general rubbish and larger items. New England Waste front
lift bins come in 1.5 and 3 cubic metres.

New England Waste services the Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Inverell, Guyra, Uralla, Armidale, Warwick and Stanthorpe areas and in between with an extensive range of skip bins, hook bins, septic services and port-a-loos. Skip Bin New England Waste

Wondering what skip is best?

If this is your first time hiring a skip bin – or even if you are a seasoned renovator, it can be difficult determining the best skip size for your needs.

The New England Waste Skip Bin Hire Comparison Chart will help you decide what works for you by comparing our 2, 3, 4 or 6 or 8 cubic metre skips to their otto or trailer equivalents.

Want to get the best value out of your skip? Here’s some handy tips:

Packing

When packing your skip, it’s best to take the time prior to break up any large, bulky items to maximise your available space and avoid air pockets. Take the legs off furniture and take a part appliances. Big, bulky items placed at the bottom of your skip will only waste space. Start with flat items first and remember to fill up the corners.

Regift

Before you plonk that old table into the skip, have a think about posting it on Facebook Marketplace for free or giving it to a friend or family member to “up cycle”. Not only will you maximise your available space in your skip for other junk, you’ll know you’ve contributed to a brighter environment by reducing land waste.

Safety first!

Doing a home renovation, small project or home clean up can be extremely rewarding but remember that a heap of people are injured every year doing DIY, so follow the advice of the professionals and wear protective gear such as gloves, hard toe shoes and long pants such as jeans or work pants.
